Alicante City Day Trip

Alicante is one of Spain’s most liveable and underrated cities — a medium-sized Mediterranean capital with genuine history, excellent food, a working port and a lifestyle that draws as many Spanish visitors as foreign ones. At just 20 minutes by car from Vista del Sol (or reachable by regular bus service), it is the obvious choice for a full day trip.

The city’s single most dramatic sight is the Castillo de Santa Bárbara, a vast 9th-century Moorish fortress that sits on a rocky outcrop directly above the beach and city centre. Entry is free, and the views from the upper ramparts are extraordinary — on a clear day you can see as far as Tabarca Island and the mountains of Murcia. A lift cuts through the rock from the beach level, or you can walk up through the historic quarter.

Below the castle, the Barrio de Santa Cruz is Alicante’s old town: a tangle of steep, narrow streets lined with whitewashed houses, bougainvillea, tapas bars and artisan shops. It is one of the most atmospheric historic quarters on the Costa Blanca, and largely undiscovered by the mass tourist circuit.

The famous Explanada de España promenade runs along the harbour front, paved in a distinctive undulating mosaic of over six million marble tiles. It is at its best in the evening when the entire city comes out to stroll, and the harbour restaurants begin to fill with the sound of conversation and the smell of grilled fish.

For culture, the MARQ (Provincial Archaeological Museum of Alicante) is one of the finest regional museums in Spain — modern, beautifully curated and free on Sundays. The city’s covered Mercado Central is excellent for local produce, cured meats and Spanish wines.
