Clot de Galvany Nature Reserve

4.5 / 5

The Clot de Galvany is one of the most important and surprising natural spaces on the Costa Blanca — a 290-hectare protected wetland that begins almost literally at the edge of Arenales del Sol and stretches inland through salt marshes, coastal dunes and Mediterranean scrubland.

The reserve was formally protected in 1994 and today forms part of a wider network of natural parks along the Alicante coast. Its combination of wetland habitats, dune systems and freshwater lagoons creates a mosaic of environments that supports an extraordinary diversity of wildlife. Over 200 species of birds have been recorded here, including flamingos, grey herons, spoonbills, avocets, little egrets and a wide range of waders and migratory species. Spring migration — roughly March to May — is the peak season for variety, but the reserve offers rewarding wildlife watching at any time of year.

A network of clearly marked walking and cycling trails winds through the reserve, passing several elevated birdwatching hides positioned to overlook the main lagoons. The paths are flat and well-maintained, making them accessible for all ages and abilities. A full circuit of the main trails takes approximately 90 minutes on foot.

Beyond the birdlife, the reserve is simply a beautiful place to spend a morning. The quality of light over the salt marshes at sunrise is extraordinary — all pinks and golds reflected in still water. Rent bikes from a local shop in Gran Alacant and cycle the full perimeter trail for a memorable few hours in genuine Valencian wilderness.
