Tabarca Island Boat Trip

5 / 5

Tabarca is the kind of place that travel writers struggle to describe without resorting to superlatives. Spain’s only inhabited island, declared the country’s first Marine Reserve in 1986, is a flat sliver of limestone barely one kilometre long — yet it packs in some of the most memorable experiences on the entire Costa Blanca.

The crossing takes 30 minutes from Santa Pola harbour or 45 minutes from Alicante port, with regular ferry services running from April through to October. Arriving by sea and watching the 18th-century fortified walls and church tower emerge from the blue water is genuinely cinematic — the island looks like something from a historical adventure novel.

Once ashore, the island has no cars and no roads to speak of — just narrow lanes between low whitewashed buildings, a handful of restaurants, a small church, and the old fortifications built by Charles III in the 1760s to protect against Barbary Coast pirates. Walking the full perimeter of the island takes about 45 minutes at a very leisurely pace.

The real draw, for many visitors, is the water. The Marine Reserve status has allowed the underwater ecosystem to recover remarkably — the sea around Tabarca is among the clearest and most bio-diverse in the Spanish Mediterranean, with visibility often exceeding 20 metres. Bring snorkelling equipment and spend an hour drifting over the rocky reefs teeming with sea bream, octopus, sea urchins and the occasional moray eel.

For lunch, every restaurant on the island serves some version of caldero tabarquino — the island’s signature dish, a rich saffron-scented stew of fish and rice that has been cooked here for centuries. It is extraordinary, and alone worth the boat trip.
